Head lice are parasitic insects found most commonly behind the ears and near the neckline at the back of the neck. The medical term for head lice infestation is Pediculus humanus capitis. There are 6 – 12 millions cases of head lice in the United States every year more commonly in children than adults. A head lice infestation can be psychologically disturbing, but head lice are not a health hazard and are not responsible for the spread of any disease.
Below are some Do It Yourself remedies for Lice Removal from Home however pediatricians can’t vouch for the effectiveness of these Do It Yourself concoctions. Having Lice Infestation is a very time consuming procedure and hopefully you have good strong eyes to see these little critters and to get each and every nit (egg) otherwise the whole cycle re occurs. Plus if both parents are working and the infected child can’t return to school until they have been cleared of the lice with a note. So letting a Lice Removal Specialist take care of the eradication gives you a guarantee that your child will be louse free versus other methods such as the ones listed below which might not work and the chances of reinfection are high and then you are losing more time and more money not to mention the psychological toll that it begins to take on the child and the parents.

Home Remedies Just Don’t Work.
Smothering lice with mayonnaise or olive oil will not work either. Lice have a breathing system that is also protected by this hard exoskeleton. We have had people tell us, their child slept with a head of mayo for 8 hours. This is a waste of time!
There are people who give advice online to put kerosene and mouth wash on your child’s head. THIS DOES NOT WORK, AND IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS IN EVERY WAY! Do NOT put these types of products on your child’s head. It can burn their scalp, their eyes, and cause hair loss.
Lemon juice is considered as one of the effective home remedy for the head lice treatment and dandruff. Take equal amount (1-2 tablespoon) of lemon juice and garlic paste. Apply this mixture over the scalp and allow it to dry for 25-35 minutes. Wash your hair in cold water and rinse off the all dirt, dust, etc. I believe this works more for dandruff than for lice actually.
Apply heavy amount of olive oil on your hair, and cover it with a plastic bag. Keep it overnight, later with the help of lice comb, take out all the head lice. Repeat this after every 10 days.
Make a mixture by adding egg yolk, vinegar, and lemon juice. Take egg yolk of 2 eggs, add 2-3 tablespoon of vinegar and equal amount of lemon juice into it. Mix it well and apply on the scalp. Allow it to dry for 20-30 minutes and then wash it off with warm water.
.Soak 10-12 almonds in water and make its paste. Add 3-4 tablespoon of lemon juice in it. Apply this mixture over your scalp, and allow it to dry for 1-2 hours. Wash hair with cold water.
Apple cider vinegar:
Similarly, vinegar is also quite useful for removing head lice. Take 3-4 tablespoon of vinegar, add 2 tablespoon of lemon juice and garlic paste. Mix it well and apply it on the scalp. Allow it to dry for 2 hours and wash it off. Do this 3-4 times a month, strips the natural oils out of the hair and you would need to deep condition.
Alcohol also helps in eradicating head lice. Massage alcohol over your hair and keep it for half an hour. Wash it off. Do this once in a week. However very damaging to the hair and you need to deep condition.
Margosa (Neem) leaves:
Apply its paste on hair, allow it to dry and then wash it off. Do this at least twice a week. Conditioner containing margosa leaves are also good. Similarly, basal (tulsi) leaves are also quite useful. Take 20-30 basal leaves and make its paste. Either use it plain or mix with equal quantity of margosa leaf paste. Apply over the scalp and allow it to dry for half an hour and then wash it off. Repeat this 2-3 times a week.

Apart from our Natural Lice Repellent Product with Rosemary, given below are some of the preventive measures which one should always take:
- Girls should wear their hair up in a braid or bun. The less accessible that the hair is, the more difficult it is for the bugs to get into it.
- Put gel, mousse or spray in your child’s hair. The products put a protective layer on the hair, which makes it harder for the bug to attach to the hair
- Bring your own pillows if you are spending the night with family or friends
- Don’t let your children share combs or other hair accessories
- Don’t share caps or hats
